Moroccan car rental regulations

Last updated: 2026

An overview of the main Moroccan rules that apply to car rental, alongside our own rental terms.

This information is provided for general guidance to help you understand the legal framework for car rental in Morocco. It is not legal advice. For specific questions, consult a legal professional or the relevant authorities.

Driving license

Driving a vehicle in Morocco requires a valid license of the matching category (category B for light vehicles), under the Moroccan road code (law 52-05, in force since 2010). Tourists and foreign residents may drive with their foreign national license for up to one year from the date they enter Morocco.

Mandatory insurance

Moroccan law requires every vehicle owner to hold civil liability insurance before the vehicle is put into circulation (insurance code, law 17-99, article 120). This insurance covers bodily and material damage caused to third parties in an accident. Our fleet is insured in line with this requirement.

Rental agreement

Every vehicle rental must be documented by a written contract stating the identity of both parties, the rental duration, the price, and the insurance terms. This contract, which you sign at pickup, governs our relationship alongside our rental terms.

Technical inspection and road tax

Rental vehicles must be up to date with periodic technical inspection and the annual road tax (vignette). This obligation falls on our agency — our entire fleet is kept compliant.

Traffic violations

The driver remains personally responsible for any traffic violation (speeding, illegal parking, phone use while driving, etc.) committed during the rental period, along with any resulting fines.

In case of an accident

An amicable accident report ('constat amiable') must be completed by the parties involved. If there are injuries or a disagreement over the circumstances, contacting the police or gendarmerie on site is mandatory under current regulations.
